Pacific Northwest Journey Fly Drive

This 22-day Fly Drive highlights the different ecosystems and environments to be found in the Pacific Northwest, from the Volcanic Regions of Rainier, Crater Lake and Lassen, to the lush forests of Yosemite National Park.

Day 01 - UK – Seattle

Your holiday to the Pacific Northwest begins with scheduled flights with United Airlines from London Heathrow to Seattle. Upo­n arrival collect your rental car and drive to your hotel.

Overnights (3): Seattle - Hotel Max

Day 02-03 - Seattle 

Two full days to enjoy the sights and attractions of Seattle. Take the monorail from the downtown area to the Space Needle Park where you will find museums along with the exceptional view from the Space Needle. Visit Pike Place market with many interesting stores and views over the water. Take a trip to Tillicum Island State Park to taste clams, enjoy a smoked salmon buffet and learn about the history of the Coast Salish Tribes. For something more up to date, take a drive to Everett and the Boeing factory to see how they build some of the largest airliners in the world. There is plenty to do in the city in the evenings with many great restaurants and for the fun loving - take the Seattle Underground Tour.

Day 04 - Seattle - Forks (Olympic Park) (145 miles) 

Take a short ferry ride across Puget Sound to Bremerton this morning (ferry charges not included) to begin your tour of the Olympic Peninsula. Along the route you will find several state parks, the artist community of Townsend and the drive into the Olympic Park for the view from Hurricane Ridge. You will pass along the shores of Lake Crescent. A visit to Sol Duc Hot Springs is also recommended. Your stay for the next two nights is in Forks - a logging community that is best known as the home of Bella and Edward of the Twilight Movie Series. 

Overnights (2): Forks - Forks Motel 

Day 05 - Olympic National Park 

Spend the day in this World Heritage Site, there are many roads through and around the park, stops include the Noe Bay Area, the Hoh Rain Forest and the Coastline at La Push each area will give you an aspect of the parks three major ecosystems. 

Day 06 - Olympic National Park - Mt Rainier Park (240 miles) 

A beautiful drive today along the Pacific Ocean will bring you to the Quinault Indian Reserve and a walk through the rain forest of Lake Quinault. Then across to the state capital area of Olympia before heading into the Mt Rainier National Park for a two night stay. 

Overnights (2): Mt Rainier Park - Nisqually Inn

Day 07 - Mt Rainier National Park

A full day to enjoy some hiking and exploring in Mt Rainier National Park along the sides of this massive dormant volcano which at 14,410 feet is the highest peak in the Cascades

Day 08 - Mt Rainier National Park - Portland (177 miles) 

A short distance south of Mt Rainier is the Mt St Helens National Volcanic Park where you can pop into the visitor centres or even take a helicopter flight to see the damage areas from the latest eruption of this volcano which last erupted in 1980. The continue to the Columbia River where you enter Oregon with your destination of Portland. 

Overnights (2): Portland - Hotel Modera

Day 09 - Portland 

Explore some of the stunning gardens and parks of Portland, two that are outstanding are the Rose Garden and the Japanese Garden with views off to Mt Hood to the east. Close by, you will find some of the excellent Oregon Wineries. 

Day 10 - Portland - Bend (159 miles) 

Follow the Columbia River Gorge as you travel east (past the largest waterfall in Oregon) to Hood River. Here you will drive along the Eastern edge of Mount Hood and then into the Warm Springs Indian Reservation as you travel to o­ne of the fastest growing "retirement communities" in the American West - the community of Bend. This region is growing is due to its climate as well as its many activities near the city. 

Overnight (1): Bend - Shilo Inn Bend 

Day 11 - Bend - Crater Lake (111 miles) 

As you travel south from Bend you will pass thru another volcanic region - the Newberry National Volcanic Monument, nearby is the Lava Butte, rising 500 feet above the surrounding lava flows. Take a tour of the Lave River Cave which is located approximately a mile from the visitor centre. Continue o­n to the north entrance of the Crater Lake National Park where you will again have a two night stay. 

Overnights (2): Crater Lake - Crater Lake Lodge - (Deluxe Lakeside Rooms) 

Day 12 - Crater Lake 

If driving around the Crater Lake, we suggest the clockwise direction as all the viewpoints will be easier to access and when you get to the South Side of the Lake you will find many activities including a boat tour o­n the lake. 

Day 13 - Crater Lake - Lassen Volcanic Park (274 miles)

From the Crater Lake Park, you will travel south past the Klamath Marsh National Wildlife Refuge. From here it is a short drive into Northern California where you will drive around Mount Shasta, o­ne of the more popular summer resort regions along the west coast. Continue through the National Forest regions to the Lassen National Volcanic Park. The lodge for the next two nights is outside the south entrance of this park area.

Overnights (2): Lassen Volcanic Park - Mineral Lodge 

Day 14 - Lassen Volcanic Park 

Lassen Volcanic Park is o­ne of the lessor known and explored parks. In addition to spectacular Lassen Peak (10,457 feet) the world's largest plug-dome volcano, the park contains boiling hot springs, steaming sulphur vents and tube caves. 

Day 15 - Lassen Volcanic Park - Lake Tahoe (221 miles) 

Your drive today will continue through the mountain foothills and forest regions of Northern California as you pass through regions that were first settled when gold was first found in this region. The drive will end as you pass along the shores of o­ne of the most beautiful lakes in North America...and stay along the southern shores of Lake Tahoe. 

Overnights (2): South Lake Tahoe - Best Western Plus Station House

Day 16 - Lake Tahoe 

A Day for exploring and hiking around the Lake Tahoe or spend a little indoor time (and some dollars!) o­n the Nevada side of the lake where you will find some major area casino's. 

Day 17 - Lake Tahoe - Yosemite National Park (179 miles) 

The route today will take into Nevada for a short distance past Mono Lake, a very desert lake especially after viewing the alpine likes of Lake Tahoe. Here you will enter the Eastern gate of the Yosemite National Park for the drive across Tioga Pass (please note opening and closing dates vary each year subject to weather conditions) and into the Western Valley of o­ne of the most visited parks in the United States. Your lodge is just outside the park along the Merced River. 

Overnights (2): Yosemite National Park Area - Yosemite View Lodge - River View Rooms 

Day 18 - Yosemite National Park 

Return to Yosemite Park this day for some hiking in the main Yosemite Valley - an area known as El Capitan, Half Dome and many beautiful waterfalls. Your first stop of the day should be the visitor centre which will give you plenty of ideas for the day. 

Day 19 - Yosemite National Park - San Francisco (211 Miles)

The route today changes from mountain to agricultural valley and then a return to the Pacific Coast as you travel from Yosemite to San Francisco. The hotel is in the heart of the downtown area near to Union Square, China Town, Japan Town and an easy walk to the Cable Car and Tram System. Return your car o­n arrival in San Francisco as you would not want to drive or even park in this city. 

Overnights (3): San Francisco - Hotel Metropolis

Day 20-21 - San Francisco 

Two full days to explore all that you can in the city by the bay. Take the bus to Golden Gate bridge and walk across to the viewing point o­n the other side, take a boat tour of the harbour or even across to Alcatraz to tour the famous prison. Take a walk through Fisherman’s Wharf with its many entertainments and eateries. For a bit of retail therapy, take in the shops at Union Square. 

Day 22 - San Francisco - UK 

Take a final refreshing coffee and walk around the Wharf before transferring independently to San Francisco Airport to check in for your flight home.
