Guide to USA Oklahoma
OKLAHOMA
"the sooner state"
Experience all that’s best about America in Oklahoma.
Once known as Indian Territory, Oklahoma is home to more American Indian tribes than any other state, with 39 tribal headquarters and members of at least 67 tribes. Visitors will find a blend of traditional and contemporary culture at art galleries, museums, historic sites, powwows, dances and festivals.
The Old West also lives on in working ranches, rodeos and cattle trade. You can follow the Chisholm Trail along present-day Highway 81. Cattle are still driven along the route in semi-trucks headed for the largest cattle auction in the United States, which begins every Monday morning in Stockyards City in Oklahoma City.
Oklahoma City is also home to the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum, a treasure of Western and Native American art and artifacts. Tulsa is home to the world’s most comprehensive collection of art of the American West at the Gilcrease Museum.
Most visitors also tour the compelling Oklahoma City National Memorial, located on the site of the tragic 1995 federal building terrorist attack.
Other Oklahoma highlights include plentiful outdoor recreation in wide open spaces, pristine forests, and refreshing lakes and rivers.
